Torre Mozza in Tuscany
There are two locations of the same name in Italy: Torre Mozza in Salento and Torre Mozza in Riotorto.
In addition to their names, what characterises them is a clear although different sea, since one is the sea of Puglia and the other is the sea of Tuscany.
Why is it called Torre Mozza?
Returning to our Torre Mozza, the one in Tuscany, the name derives from the presence of a tower that is cut off at the top.
The tower, erected by the Appiani lords of Piombino around 1500, consists of three parts built at different times. The purpose of this defensive structure was to guard against the arrival of ore from the Island of Elba. The ancient watchtower is the part of the building with a square shape looking towards the sea. This type of shape characterises most coastal towers of the time.
A new wing was built on the opposite side facing the hills and later a small building was added to it.
Finally, a staircase was created on the middle part of the supporting structure, connecting the various levels of the tower.
Today Torre Mozza has become a luxury resort directly on the beach.
